What Is a Frenectomy (Tongue-Tie / Lip-Tie)?
Under the tongue and between the lips and gums there are bands of connective tissue called frenula. Their location can vary from person to person, and they can also be found between the back teeth and the cheek. Frenula that are shorter, longer or thicker than normal can cause various problems, and a frenectomy is performed to treat them.
Structural problems of the frenulum can cause serious problems in some patients and only minor ones in others. Speech and eating difficulties are among the most serious. They can also contribute to gum disease, gaps between the teeth and aesthetic concerns. In all these cases, a frenectomy can be performed with a laser or other techniques.
