What Is Bad Breath (Halitosis)?

Bad breath, medically called halitosis, is an unpleasant odour from the mouth and nose, mostly caused by bacteria on the surface of the tongue and in the throat.

What Causes Bad Breath?

Common causes include poor oral hygiene, gum disease, tooth decay, stomach infections and reflux, tonsil stones, sinusitis, dry mouth, poorly fitting crowns and bridges, mouth sores, partially impacted wisdom teeth, bacteria in the throat and on the tongue, and the use of tobacco products.

How to Prevent Bad Breath

  • Once any problems originating in the mouth have been treated, good oral hygiene is essential: correct and effective tooth brushing, use of dental floss and a tongue cleaner, and cleaning of dentures if any.
  • Mouthwashes and chewing gum containing zinc can help.
  • Drink plenty of water, frequently.
  • Avoid long periods without eating.
  • Eat foods rich in probiotics.
  • Nuts such as walnuts and pistachios, cinnamon, herbal teas, mint, parsley, apples and cucumbers can help prevent bad breath.
