Why Is Tongue Cleaning Necessary?
Digestion begins in the mouth. The mouth contains bacteria that help digest food; they are carried by saliva and accumulate with the food residue left in the mouth. Some of these bacteria are necessary for digestion, but too many bacteria cause bad odour, so the mouth needs to be cleaned thoroughly. Cleaning the mouth, which hosts organisms such as bacteria and fungi, means keeping the bacterial balance.
Cleaning your tongue with a tongue cleaner takes about a minute and has many benefits:
- It helps protect oral and dental health.
- Plaque left in the mouth by food residue or smoking is removed more effectively.
- It helps eliminate bad breath.
- Bacteria on the tongue can spread to the tonsils and oesophagus; cleaning prevents this. When toxins on the tongue are removed, substances absorbed by the biofilm are prevented from entering the body.
- Cleaning the bacteria on the taste buds improves the sense of taste. Clean taste buds allow better taste, more saliva and more efficient digestion.
- The tongue loses its yellowish colour and regains its natural pink appearance.
Tongue Cleaning Methods
You can use a tongue-cleaning brush or a tongue scraper. If you do not have one, a spoon can be used: keep one tablespoon only for this purpose. Place the spoon upside down on your tongue, with its underside facing the palate, and gently pull it towards you to scrape the surface of the tongue, taking care not to injure it. You can also use a toothbrush instead of a tongue scraper.
